I say attempted because there were a lot failures. So many failures that the phrase "Mechanized Mage" became synonymous with snake-oil and buying bridges. But the by-products of these failures was alchemy: using energy wavelengths magic to change atomic structure of periodic elements.

An idea springs to mind about Italy's place in your timeline: neutral city-states that successfully fought off Napoleon and achieved true independence, but never unified as a nation, instead remaining a collection of individual cities that provide a refuge for artists/inventors/bankers/refugees from the great European conflicts. So basically a mix of Medieval Italy and Switzerland's neutrality/banking influence.
