Odd Man Out by NicklausofKrieg Odd Man Out by NicklausofKrieg
Just some sketches i did to get back in the rhythm of drawing

besides doing some things for work here and there i haven't really drawing anything personal in a while let alone something warhammer related

A. Ordo Hereticus Lady Inquisitor
B. Rogue Trader
C. Ordo Xenos Inquisitor
D. Eldar Hunters Captain
E. Death Korps Grenadier (unmasked)
F. Generic Guardsman (not Cadian)

Ah, another fine selection of Imperial character designs to dissect - let's to it!

A) Somewhere, within that walking Gothic castle, a human remains trapped ever since their teleportation device malfunctioned. Now I like the general design of the armour, but even for 40K that gorget and the pauldrouns are a bit much. Unless they come with sensory bundles installed, this Inquisitor is screwed the instant a witch leaves her peripheral vision!

B) Red haired Vladimir Makarov IN SPACE makes his return from the other doodles sketch, showcasing the tech level of some civilized worlds in the Imperium.

C) While I appreciate the fresh perspective on the Inquisition offered by this individual - that it's not all fieldwork and glorious purges, someone has to stay behind and navigate the bureaucratic labyrinth of the Imperium's internal information - I can't say I'm crazy about it personally. I mean, he does look like a fat office slob. :P The CIA agent helping the South Koreans in the first Mercenaries game is proof that such a character type can be pretty awesome, in a mastermind sort of way, but its not for me.

D)  *Much* better! Aside from the whole, Not-Heer look, I like the Hauptmann's Iron Cross with Soulstone and cybernetic looking helmet, which suggests to me an attempt to find a counter to filthy Eldar pysker tricks. The Soulstone also serves as a good pyschological weapon to employ against the xenos; I can easily imagine their fury at such a sacred item being used as a trophy. I can also imagine its influence steadily driving the Captain insane and heightening his obsession at eradicating the aliens to make the voices stop, so cool stuff all around really.

E) His eyes have seen the face of war....or he's probably just miserable that someone stole his mask.

F) Not Cadian, but a Guardsman from a world close enough to Cadia's supply chain to develop similar equipment? It's a practical design and one I approve of.

They all pretty much fit into a story I've had in my head for a real long long time.

A) She pretty much only wears that for full-on assaults where violence of action is key. Coupled with its helmet, it allows her to strike hard and fast with impunity, imagine the juggernaut armor from CoD or the power armor from FO4. On regular or more subtle operations she's either in disguise or wears similar attire as Inquisitor C's but with body armor and combat webbing. She's working with Inquisitor C to kill or capture the Eldar Hunter Captain

B) He's a heavily disgruntled and traumatized IG veteran turned Rogue Trader, he also commands a sizable mercenary army. Eldar Hunter Captain has used his men many times before as canon fodder to cover his elite forces in clandestine ops. When he was in the guard he served alongside Inquisitor C, they were good friends.

C) Fat office slob/washed out intelligence agent was the look I was going for with him, so if you see him that way, I succeeded, he's supposed to look mundane and inglorious as hell. He sure knows his way around a shotgun in CQB though. He used to be just guardsman, but was selected for Inquisitorial Stormtrooper training, he's risen through the ranks since. His current backseat role is something like a retirement for him.

D) He's the captain of an elite force specially trained and equipped for combating Eldar. He's backed by extremely rogue elements in the Ordo xenos, his obsession with combating and studying the Eldar makes him a very vital asset. He's died three times already, he lost both his arms to Banshees, was cut in half by a Farseer, and burnt alive by an Avatar of Khaine. Each time his rogue benefactors have brought him back to life, his arms, guts, and head are all bionic now. He's also in cahoots with a one-armed genocidal rogue Biel-Tan Farseer.

E) He's the sole survivor of his Grenadier company after they were left to fend for themselves when an entire Eldar warhost steamrolled over their position, by then Eldar Hunter Captain had already gotten what he wanted and was long gone form the surface of the planet leaving behind all those he used. Since then this Death Korps Grenadier has been on a mad vendetta shadowing the Captain wherever he goes.

F) He's actually the "Odd Man Out" this drawing is named after, if you'll notice everyone is in black, grey, white, and red, while he all in khaki and brown. He's basically the character that kicks off the story when he runs into the vengeful Grenadier, just a hapless guardsman who gets tangled in everyone's schemes.

B: reminds me of Mr. Foster. I love the combination of suit and armor. 40k needs more suits.

yeah 40k could use a smarter and more modern look, 'cause right now i think its design borrow too much from warhammer fantasy and that lack of distinction is a bit of a downer for me

Agreed. It needs a bit less "sci-fi fantasy" and a bit more "dark sci-fi now"

I thought the fat inquisitor was in the hereticus branch and specialized in heresy committed by administratum people

nah i gave him this look since i kinda had the idea of Ordo xenos personnel dressing up like Men In Black or like cold war secret services and black ops, it kinda give them a more sci-fi look which i feel is kinda more fitting since they're dealing with aliens. whereas the Ordo Malleus look like medieval knights since they're dealing with demons

the Ordo Hereticus on the other hand should have a very wide array of uniforms and gear to choose from since they have a lot of different enemies to combat

it's all about subject matter really, i always felt a bit disappointed at how GW keeps making inquisitors look like spanish inquisitors of olden times regardless of their Ordo

C: "So why are you here? Business? Or pleasure?"

D: "ECSTASY!"

I notice the subtle changes with the Cadian, it looks less modern more Warhammer 40k style. Also E is staring into my soul. He was a Grenadier you did a few months ago right?

nah that guardsman is just a generic guardsman, i've decided to reserve the more modern looking gear for specific regiments like Cadians or Elysians, as for generic guardsmen i used the designs of the guardsmen from Chaos Rising since they looked pretty modern enough but retained some 40k flavor

save your curses. that report on the dead farseer is not exactly what it seems but rather just what they (the inquisition) want you to think. it's all black ops and censorship really

as for that Sister she's actually an inquisitor, she's one of my old characters that you've probably seen before, it's just that on her previous design her armor was white and much more ornate and a lot less bulky

i never really saw the SoBs as anything that had to do with gender actually but rather a logical course of action on GW's part

considering Space marines are 40k's monks (albeit warrior monks) then it's only logical that the nuns would be something quite similar

but then again that's no SoB that's a lady inquisitor

I'm guessing the lady inquisitor is ordo malleus? and come to think of it, do SoB have a more Gothic style than the space marines? they certainly look scarier
