Distant Daughter by NicklausofKrieg Distant Daughter by NicklausofKrieg
if there are three things i've heard Krieg is known for it's the Death korps it's war factories and opera music

and on that note i drew representatives of all those three so here we have a Death Korps general along with his Grenadier guards (i drew most of them as representatives of the death korps to symbolize it's dominance in krieg society) an arms factory foreman (with his adeptus mechanicus badge) and an opera singer

this also features :iconraven913:'s inquisitor character on her trip to Kreig when she was still an inquisitorial acolyte

she was born on a warship to a pair of Death korps soldiers on their way to their deployment when both of her parents were killed in action she was left on the doorstep of the nearest Adepta Sororitas monastery where she was taken in and and raised by sisters there

so besides checking out her genes it's pretty hard to tell she has any relation to Krieg

Is the opera thing true I can't seem to find information on that at my usual sources? If so where do you get your fluff? The books themselves I guess, since I am too poor to play the tabletop game.

Being a freakishly tall owner of a gas-mask myself, I immediately relate to the officer at the back, just towering over everyone else.

This is an incredibly cool picture and I think you've done a superb job of capturing Krieg society (or at least the upper echelons): the arms factory foreman in particular is a good representation of what I imagine Mechanicus personnel "going native" and eventually blending into the populace of the world they are stationed to after so many centuries would look like - perhaps a distant descendant of a full blooded Techpriest but now more Krieger then bionic.

Funnily enough, the only thing I can't wrap my head around for Krieg is what the underground hive cities would look and function like.

Ok after doing a little looking up I found some old Articles that circulated before the Imperial Armor came out. Most of it is true and backed by the Imperial Armor book, but of course some of it was changed with that. The rest is of course GWs fluff. I highlighted a specific part of the article, but have where I found it as well.

"The military established universal suffrage for all men over 21 who did their three years of military service. Military service is compulsory and only very few escape it, as they are considered as second rate individuals, who shrink away from their duties. Although women are barred from voting by a highly conservative mindset they are highly respected, if only because they are the mothers and wives of soldiers."

[link]

You've got to remember, most GW fluff is left vauge for a reason. Part of the game and hobby is for us to fill in the blanks with how we see it. So just keep that in mind when looking at anything GW background related. I mean look at how they've so drastically changed the backgrounds of their armies. Most recently the Necrons got their backgrounds completely changed.

call me a krieger for female rights then

and anyway i'm sure we can make some exception to women who want to join since krieg uses vitae-wombs to clone most of their troops we can send some mothers and wives off to fight sacrifice to the imperial cause is highly promoted after all

Progressiveness is not acceptable in the Imperium of Man lol

Honestly, like I said before it's there for interpretation for a reason. So interpret the lore as you please lol

I think it's generally accepted that fans can ignore some fluff when they come up with their own stories; Games Workshop canon changes all the freaking time.

Problem... and I know Im about to be that guy but. The Death Korps doesn't issue Female Troopers. The Death Korps is an All Male Army, unlike Cadia and other systems. But just like Vostyora with their First Born Sons pact. Sorry. Though I LOVE the drawing very stylish.

well for one thing though none of the females depicted here are members of the death korps one's a civilian and the other is an inquisitorial acolyte but of course i have drawn death korps guardswomen

mind giving me any source of that information? beside krieg's cloning technology i've never read/heard anything about them having a male only military tradition

Well it did look a bit like one of them was supposed to be a Guardswoman. But the best source is the Siege of Vraks Imperial Armor Volume 5 I believe. It's in the description of the Death Korps it's self. Their traditions are of all male military force, and while I know it's well known with the Cloning. I still haven't read anything to support that fact, and in Imperial Armor, they don't mention cloning. It's honestly the female on the far right, that made me think it was a Female Kriegsman. Still love the drawing.

well i reread Imperial armor Vol 5 and it didn't mention guardswomen but it didn't mention an all male tradition either, which is something i'd expect since i imagine kriegers being way too pragmatic to let some gender tradition interfere with recruitment of regiments, which is an utmost priority to them, i also count in Krieg's martyrdom society i'd imagine almost every krieger who's not working on planetary infrastructure would want to join the death korps since it's practically every krieger's dream to give their lives for the imperium

mind giving some other sources and maybe some quotations? i'd really appreciate some confirmation 'cause if what you say is true then i'll have to disregard some characters i've made either that or just flip the finger at Krieg fluff and go as i was

Actually it really is in that particular tome. I'd have to reread it to find the exact spot. But it does indeed speak of Krieg regiments being comprised of Kriegsmen, and think of it this way. They need to create troopers, you need females for that, and without them, they would be screwed. Krieg women, don't leave their posts on their home world. It's their one and only lot in life. (Please ladies no calling me a sexist) But indeed their posts are in the kitchen and birthing babies. Honestly Fluff is there for the reason to be molded and effected as you please for the most part. So keep your characters if you want, but Krieg Guardsmen, Siege regiments, and otherwise are all male... Ok this message has taken me ten minutes to write, as I went to find my Imperial Armor, and can't... I may have to sacrifice my woman, to the Emperor.

Wouldn't be a bad thing to try. You have a very good drawing style for humans and humanoids. More realistic than others I've seen.
Possible idea: imperial guard family, with a guardsman looking nervously at his commisar relative. Good idea?

Not surprise that they like operas,
good media for propaganda and a emotional outlet for the people.
No doubt operas are popular on worlds colonize by Death Korps of krieg.

Krieg and opera singing. Not somthing I would have thought of, but i can see how it could fit.

I can really see Fluren und Triften from Der Freischutz fitting Krieg brilliantly, given the lyrics are basically 'trust in god(emporer) and their will be war everywhere' in german. The idea crossed my mind because i'd just watched Hellsing where a character sung it before battle.

Really slipped off topic, been looking through your gallery and i love your Krieg drawings a lot.

I want to join the Death Korps just so I can get a chance at wearing on of those uniforms.

I love how you manage to acheive such detail by using monocrome colours. It's..astounding.

thanks that's quite a thing to say about my art it's much appreciated :D

though i've got no idea how my drawings are "astounding" most of the colors i use are just generic photoshop swatches

I used 'astounding' becuase of the fact that I haven't seen much art using monochrome colours. Even in professional work. I once say one using the old psychedelic colour scheme, and to be honest it felt like I was on an acid trip.
This style of art is refreshing and it also helps show the bleak grimness of the 41st millenium without going over the top.
