C H E N K O V

now i know most of you wouldn't recognize him (since i draw Valhallans looking like 80s Soviet troops, rather than just snow-people with guns) but this is kinda my loose take on Commander Kubrik Chenkov of the 18th Valhallan regiment, "the Tundra Wolves".

in a way he's like a stereotypical Soviet commander taken all the way to eleven, human wave attacks, human mine-sweepers, you know, your usual meatshield and corpse-drowning tactics, and not to forget that his bolt-pistol has killed more of his own men than enemies. he's only really unique because he takes it to the extreme, he's almost turned the expenditure of human life into some kind of art, ten million dead to break a siege, and countless more dead in a river to poison the enemie's water supply. this guy's a madman. 

the codexes describe him as a mean, grim-faced man, but i really can't seem to shake this image of him off, i keep thinking of him as person who's grown so numb to the death, destruction, and carnage that he's reached some kind of a psychotic bliss and tolerance to it all, he feels like a high-roller in a casino with lots of money (guardmen) to gamble away. which is not really all that crazy, since of course we all keep hearing that in the Imperium Of Man life is looked upon no different from currency.

so basically this piece shows Chenkov after another victory accompanied by a unit's traumatized lone survivor, and a junior officer as she reads out the receipt (casualty report) to another one of his multimillion guardsmen purchases.
